  • Saettele Jewelers at Brentwood Boulevard and Clayton Road, hosted a festive, casual party where they introduced LAGOS, a new jewelry line, and welcomed Bob Beumer, former owner of Hamilton Jewelers, as a new staff member. Co-owners Gus and Gary Saettele with members of their families, and Beumer with his family, greeted the guests who browsed and shopped from the splendid array of gems and jewels, with 20% of net proceeds donated to the Komen for the Cure St. Louis.

Carousel Gala - Children's Hospital

  • ~by Carla Falasco~ The Friends of St. Louis Children’s Hospital presented Carousel Gala at the Ritz Carlton where charitable guests wined, dined, and danced the night away. Since its inception in the late 80s, over $3 million has been raised by this special event. Lisa & Chris Imbs served as event co-chairs, while Marion & Van Black were acknowledged as honorary co-chairs, and Michelle & Steve Trulaske were patron co-chairs. Proceeds from Carousel Gala will support two programs at St. Louis Children’s Hospital solely funded by community donations: 454-TEEN and The Healthy Kids Express. 454-TEEN is a free help line for parents who may have questions regarding mental health issues facing their teens. More than 1,000 families have been advised by these masters-level advocates since the program began in 2007. The Healthy Kids Express is a pediatric mobile health program that benefits the community by meeting the specific and critical needs of children at risk of not receiving timely medical care.

  • ~by Carla Falasco~ Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club hosted their annual gala, Wintermezzo!, at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis Riverfront with a crowd of 500 enthusiastic supporters. Every year this event has increased volunteerism, engaged new donors, and raised awareness in the community about the Club and its youth programming. Guests enjoyed cocktails while bidding on silent auction items including a party room at Busch Stadium, an autographed Bruce Springsteen guitar, and a vacation in Mexico to name a few. After dinner guests bid in a live auction and closed the evening dancing to the sounds of the Mystic Voyage. Anheuser-Busch, BJC, the Boeing Company, Charter Communications, Express Scripts, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, SENSE Corp, and Wells Fargo Advisors were major event sponsors. Ruth E. Kim & David T. Hamilton and Patricia Whitaker & Dick Miles served as event co-chairs. Event proceeds will go towards tutoring, courses in computer literacy, college and career preparation, and health education. For over 40 years, Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club has been providing a safe place for children to strengthen their individual character and the neighborhoods they call home.

Crisis Nursery Over the Top for Tots

  • Crisis Nurseries of St. Charles County welcomed 400 guests to a pre-holiday Over the Top for Tots luncheon with designer tables and cakes on display at the Columns. More than $68,000 was raised for the Nursery’s commitment to prevent child abuse and neglect as it provides a short-term, safe haven for children, birth through age 12, whose families are faced with an emergency or crisis. Karen Prideaux, Connie Cissell, Debbie Faulkner, Elaine Kneemiller, Bee Morrell, Penny Rogers and Deb Smith helmed the event, assisted by Rev. Fran Pieper, emcee Heidi Glaus of KSDK-5, and Bonnie Define who presented the slide show. CEO DiAnne Mueller presented the Guardian Angel Award to Jack Banas, St. Charles Prosecuting Attorney, and the Children’s Champion Award to SSM St. Joseph Health Center accepted by Gaspare Calvaruson. Special gifts to the Nursery included a check for $10,000 presented by Marlene Gebhardt of Shop n Save and a $25,000 gift from UPS presented by CEO Vince Blood.

CUREiosity - Siteman Cancer Center

  • ~by Carla Falasco~ The 4th Annual CUREiosity event delivered a spectacular array of surprises to 600 guests at Lumen, while supporting the Siteman Cancer and the Mike and Judy Shannon Brain Cancer Research Fund. Each year, new Siteman “Rock Docs” are highlighted for their devotion to patients receiving cancer care. This year’s doctors included: Catherine Appleton, MD, Matthew Ellis, BSc, MB, BChir, PhD, FRCP, Adam Kibel, MD, Parag Parikh, MD, and Kathleen Wolin, ScD. Guests enjoyed international appetizers and cocktails, tunes spun by DJ Andrew, an interactive photo booth, and other curious entertainers. Barry Horn and Carol Staenberg served as event co-chairs, with Mike Shannon as honorary chair. The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center’s parent institutions, Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, are consistently ranked in the top 5 medical schools and top 10 hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The Siteman Cancer Center also offers an outreach program consisting of cancer screening and education that reaches tens of thousands annually.

Friends of Kids With Cancer Fashion Show

  • Friends of Kids with Cancer welcomed 1,000 luncheon and dinner guests for its 17th annual fashion show and boutique at the Ritz-Carlton. Friends president Kathy Richey, emcees Guy Phillips and Ed Goodman, and pediatric oncologist Dr. Bob Bergamini, acknowledged the dedicated volunteers, staff and medical professionals who enrich the daily lives of children undergoing treatment for cancer and blood-related diseases. Jan McCormick, Tara Hogan and Kathy Baker produced the fashion show which featured youth models and survivors who experienced cancer. Keynote speakers Jaxton Willman and Shane Brewer spoke of their arduous journey with cancer treatment and the remarkable remission stage they enjoy today. Kris Kennedy received the Silent Hero Award for her on-going volunteerism and marathon help and Marianne Bergamini, Mary Mercurio and Debbie Stock co-chaired the event.

The 2009 honorees were Ben Abell, Melvin Bahle, John Brightman, Peter Bunce, Frederick Kenneth Conrad, Rosemary Davison, Annie Graham, Marie Hatten, Mary Ann Lee, Edwin and Lenore Pepper, Anthony F. Sansone, Sr., Bill Schicker, Dr. Egon Schwarz, Sydell Shayer, Marjorie Smith, Jack Strosnider, Dr. William Tao, Earl Walker, the hon. George H. Walker, III, and Alexandra Zaharias. Dr. William and Pat Peck were honorary chairs, with general chairs Linda and Paul Lee; co-chair Alan Brainerd; producer Virginia Trent; executive director Mary Alice Ryan, and Julius Hunter, emcee. For 48 years STARS has served more than 5,000 seniors annually, empowering them and their caregivers with choices and options that foster a vital life.

Our Little Haven Chic Boutique

  • A record crowd of 250 eager holiday shoppers gathered at the Hilton Frontenac Hotel for ‘Chic Boutiques,’ a festive fashion event to benefit Our Little Haven. Sandra Kallaos and her mother Connie Kallaos were the chairs and the William S. Kallaos Family Foundation was the presenting sponsor. “We help kids in mind, body and soul in a foundation of love,” reminded Scott Hummel, executive director, in his words of welcome. He thanked all the participating vendors, boutiques, sponsors, models and volunteers whose work and talents will help make a positive difference in the lives of the little children at Our Little Haven. Andria Winkler was the fashion coordinator for the wonderful fall fashions donned by the models, and local broadcaster, Victoria Babu was the runway commentator. HealthLink offered relaxing chair massages. Therese Bezdichek, the Pot-of-Gold winner of $600 and a handbag, donated a portion of her winnings back to Our Little Haven.

Citizen's For Missouri's Children

  • Citizens for Missouri’s Children (CMC) celebrated its 25th anniversary with a Speak Out for Kids luncheon at the Chase. Emcee Mike Roberts of KSDK-5 and executive director Scott Gee welcomed the 250 guests and commended them for their support for CMC to “advocate for the rights and well-being of the state’s children with primary emphasis on those with the greatest need.” President Sherry Tucker presented the Silver Eleanore J. Best Award to CMC founder Phyllis Rozansky. Phyllis started the local Family Resource Center – one of the first centers in the country providing a family-based treatment approach and a therapeutic preschool for abused and neglected children. Joel James introduced the keynote speaker, Rob Grunewald, associate economist at The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. An expert on the economic benefit of investing in young children, Grunewald provided comprehensible, accessible data showing that every dollar invested in quality early childhood brings productive returns to the regional economy, and gives every little child a positive start on their educational journey.

Big Pink Blast - St. John's Mercy

  • ~by Carla Falasco~Breast cancer survivors and supporters donned their brightest shades of blush for the St. John’s Mercy Foundation 2nd Annual Big Pink Blast held at J. Buck’s in Clayton. Guests sipped cocktails and socialized while browsing jewelry, loungewear, and other pink ribbon studded merchandise. Four breast cancer survivors received complete makeover packages from Studio Branca Salon Spa valued between $200-500, and a pair of pink topaz earrings from Michael Genovese Jewelers valued at $100. St. John’s Mercy provides breast cancer services through awareness programs, screenings, mammography, ultra sounds, biopsies, transportation to and from medical appointments, and interpreters for individuals who use English as a second language. St. John’s Mercy Medical Center offers superior health care in a faith-based environment.
