Hopes & Dreams Reception

  • 27 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • ~by Carla Falasco~Hopes & Dreams, a creative partnership between Ladue News, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and Strauss Peyton Photography, highlights the stories and portraits of 15 young patients who have experienced extreme health challenges for their age. An intimate reception was held in mid September allowing family and friends a special viewing of these portraits and an opportunity to support one another. Grateful for his own children’s health and wellness, Colin Miller, photographer and owner of Strauss Peyton Photography, initiated this project to shed light on hopeful local youth overcoming great physical hardships with heads held high and eyes set on their dreams and aspirations. Mackenzie Scott, Elizabeth Stanley, Mason Byrom, Frances Neunuebel, Brooke Young, Connor Kaplan, India Moore, Kenneth and Keenan Manning, Terry Jordan, Lily Travers, Sheyenne Kampwerth, Will Sheehan, Alexis Haynes, and Cole Imbs are artfully depicted on location living out the goals they identified when Miller asked what the youngsters wanted to be when they grew up. “That simple question had special meaning because there was a time when they didn’t know if they would survive or not…” From ballerina to chef, and veterinarian to country singer, each story is a true inspiration. These portraits are currently on display at businesses throughout the community, but eventually will be donated to Children’s Hospital in 2010 where they will reside permanently.

City Academy - 10th Anniversary Carnival

  • 37 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • ~by Carla Falasco~City Academy celebrated its 10th anniversary with a carnival on the school’s campus in north St. Louis. Families gathered for snow cones, picnic eats, live entertainment by the Ralph Butler Band, performers from Every Day Circus and Abra-Kid-Abra, and a petting zoo featuring Thumbelina, the world’s smallest horse. Prizes were donated by the St. Louis Blues, the Cardinals, and the Rams. Contributing event sponsors were Ameren UE, Optimist Club of St. Louis, SEI Investments, Southwest Bank, and Stifel Nicolaus & Co., Inc. Since opening its doors in 1999, City Academy, a private, independent school, has served families with children in junior kindergarten through grade six who would otherwise attend unaccredited or underperforming public schools. “We help families to afford a school with a rigorous curriculum, extensive arts programming, and a supportive community… every child deserves an exceptional education, regardless of family income,” said President Don Danforth, III. The school places most graduates in highly competitive secondary schools including Cardinal Ritter, Chaminade, Churchill, Crossroads, John Burroughs, MICDS, Thomas Jefferson, Westminster, and Whitfield. All City Academy families pay tuition, but 100% of current students qualify for scholarship assistance, which drops the school’s full annual tuition of $14,750, to an average tuition of under $4,000 paid by families. In addition to generous individuals, corporations, and foundations, City Academy must raise over $1 million each year from community supporters to continue serving families who have limited opportunities.

Cardinal Glennon's Crystal Wagon Awards

  • 34 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • In recognition of five community leaders who have contributed to the health and welfare of children, the Board of Governors of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center presented the Crystal Wagon Awards dinner before 47 guests at the Saint Louis Club. Last year’s recipient, Allen Allred, presented this year’s honorees: Russ Carnahan, U.S. Representative; Walter J. Galvin, Jerry and Peggy Ritter, Champions of Children; and Charlie Shields, Missouri State Senator. In his inspiring invocation, Msgr. Louis F. Meyer explained how the Crystal Wagon Award is a beautiful analogy of the services of a children’s wagon. The wheels are the supporters who provide the time, talent and treasure to give Cardinal Glennon’s children a great future. The wagon holds needed supplies, and the tongue is the community and legislators who pull for the rights of children. In viewing past honorees featured on The Crystal Wagon Award Recognition Wall on permanent display at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, take a tour of the facility where miracles still happen.
